Detecting Depression in teens: Signs and symptoms

Life sure is tough; not only for the adults, but for most teens today, who end up suffering from depression, a word, which has become quiet common, and its detection for treatment at the right time, has become a necessity. The problem, surfacing in major ratios, with the early teenagers, can be described as a state of utter chaos in one’s mental and physical environment leading to anger, rebellious behavior and unexpected reactions to situations.

The most prominent symptom in a teen going through such a situation is their pessimistic attitude towards majority of things done, seen or experienced. Which in turn may further lead to disastrous effects on self as well as the peer or their surroundings in the form of violent actions, or resorting to acts of self harm or even to the limits of considering suicide as an easy and a safe way to escape this mental melancholy. Though suicide might be considered as a step hitting the mind of the sufferer at the extreme limits of this problem.

At an earlier stage, one might feel left out, and worthless leading to a process of sudden detachment from the family and friends, though they usually keep at least one trustworthy friend to discuss their problems, some other common practices being locking oneself in a lone dark room, doing things at a weirdly slow pace, feeling lethargic and lifeless.

Another note to be made by the parents or the guardians, is that there is a major difference between the symptoms shown by an adult suffering from the same problem as opposed to a teen in a depressed phase. A teen would be more rebellious and easily irritated over issues, which should be the first hint for parents to catch, whereas usually an adult would tend to sink in sadness, and despair. Headaches and stomach ailments without a medical diagnose are also a clear indication towards the need of meeting a psychiatrist.

While there are a lot smaller and unnoticed problems taking place with the affected teens like poor grades at school, problems of insomnia which should, at no cost be ignored.

But the most recent addiction towards the drugs, now easily available, which give them a feeling of a high, has become an easy escape from their deteriorating life leading to an early death or mental disability can also be considered as a sign to know if one is suffering from depression. But that is just in case if the family or the near ones get to know of this habit on time.
