Teen depression and suicide

Nowadays, depression in teens is not a new thing, and many adults tend to take it lightly. However, it is vital to understand that teen depression is not a regular teen problem like acne or pimple which would go away in time. This problem can only get worse and intensify, if the right treatment and care is not provided. The suicide rate in teens due to depression, is on the rise. It has been found that suicide is one of the major cause of death, in teenagers. Most of the deaths are caused due to failure in diagnosing the problem, at the right time. Teenagers, who are under depression, are either attention seekers or totally withdraw away from any interaction. They seek comfort and love, which is one of the most effective ways of dealing with depression. Putting it simply, all they need at times is somebody who would lend them a willing ear to listen and a hand to hold as they talk.

It is important that such teenagers be supported by friends and family members, rather than being separated from the group for being mentally ill or being treated any differently. Usually, the fact that they are not a part of the group or family, makes them more depressed.

Suicide, is the last resort for most depressed teenagers. There are various reasons for the situation coming to such an extent. The first is the lack of attention from parents and peers. The second is the growing discomfort that they face physically. These include headaches and other illnesses caused due to depression. The last reason is when depression becomes chronic and teenagers start to believe, that there is no hope for them.

There are various ways through which this problem can be avoided. Any teenager who seems to obsessed with ending their life and speaking of such things, should be immediately discouraged from the same. Instead the focus should be on improvement and remedial methods of changing their lives. It has been seen that lone adolescents, especially with divorced or separated parents, have been provided remedial therapy through pets. Their condition had improved in a matter of weeks due to the love and concern for their pets.

It is also suggested that patients who have been diagnosed with chronic depression should be dealt with positively, given more positive reading and shown movies of the same type. Conditional therapy for positive imagination has also proven to help such teenagers.

Preventive measures like removing knives and blades from their rooms and other similar things can help in reducing the attempts for suicide. But most importantly it is the love and care provided to the depression patients, which helps them to avoid thoughts of suicide and other self harming methods.
